Shout out to Chuck Brown and the unmatched atmosphere of a real Go-go party.
The video I directed for THEESatisfaction, “QueenS”. Inspired by Mickalene Thomas, of course. Cop the album here: www.subpop.com/artists/theesatisfaction
I’ll just be over here.
I’m listening to all 12 songs off of R. Kelly’s first album 12 Play for probably the first time since, idk, 1994?
Track 5: Freak Dat Body

This song suk :(

Track 4: It Seems Like You’re Ready
How can someone who wrote something as goofy as “Trapped in the Closet” sound this sincere (and sincerely decadent) about sex? I believe the question might have my answer. This song is about… well there’s this girl right? And she’s, um, ready… for stuff.
But the beat is hypnotic. I feel like beats in R&B songs were still relatively new in 1993? Bridging that gap between Vandross R&B and everything exciting about black music at the time.

Track 3: Homie Lover Friend
Speaking of the 90’s, yeesh! What a terrible terrible song. Some kind of new jack swing beat, but more boring, and R. Kelly RAPS. Say what you will the man learned to appreciate his limitations further along in career. These raps are permanently entombed in MC Brains videos.
In the lyrics he is breaking it down what “Homie,” “Lover,” “Friend” all mean. It means kicking back playing cards with the homies, wearing no makeup, admiring tight rims. And someone who can “relate to my sex drive.”
Aaliyah.

Track 2: Bump N’ Grind
Embarrassing but, I got into an argument in the line of a Wendy’s drive-thru once about who was a better New Edition member, Ralph Tresvant or Johnny Gill? I liked Ralph (always have); my friend put it this way: “Johnny f@#king took it to church!”
The beginning of “Bump N’ Grind” R. Kelly fucking takes it to the fucking wailing fucking wall. Geez Louise is he feeling it in this intro. So much so I think it portents of future outcomes. After the intro it just sort of bounces. Very 90’s. This beat wears a pair of jean overalls.

Track 1: You’re Body’s Callin’
It tastes so smooth! I keep thinking about the passenger seat of my first car, a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier (of course with headlight covers). You remember that, aye ladies?
No but for real this song is complete sex. I’m guessing it’s a theme? To be continued…
My mom told me once that when she was growing up in the 60’s her parents gave her “instructions” on what to say and how to act around white people when the family traveled down south on long road trips. “Because you were never sure how one might react.” Sort of a Hand Guide to White People.
I added a new chapter for the 2000’s called “What is the deal with Pulp?” There is no answer to this question.
