“Get at Me Dog” - DMX
“Originally in the first and third verse DMX was supposed to diss Tupac for saying West Coast hip hop is better than East Coast, but instead he dissed K-Solo. The third verse of this song was entirely from a diss of Tupac that he wrote in 1996, except Tupac is not mentioned in this song, as he disses K-Solo in it instead.”
I miss having Queen E. Park a short walk from my place.
On the flipside, I 1,000+ year-old temples and shrines within walking distance, so it’s a fair trade-off.
Oh look, one of my absolute fave songs/albums/artists.
I think I feel personally slighted when people say Outkast ain’t shit or they only had one good album or just generally talk shit about 3K’s fashions because I remember the exact place, day and time I first fell in love.
And it was everything it should be.
In a car, high school, backseat. Maybe 10 of us crammed in, drinking 40s, driving too fast and living forever. And my hand to god, “Player’s Ball” came on 106.1 KMEL and that Jetta screeched to a halt.
And we fell.
Sometimes you just know.
I will be in Denmark and Germany for the next 10 days to head-clear, write, and lie to strangers that I am R. Kelly’s manager which has nothing to do with Frank Ocean except for the inevitability that I sing “crack rock, crack rock” to myself in the company of VERY blond people. Should be fun.
Shout out to Chuck Brown and the unmatched atmosphere of a real Go-go party.
The video I directed for THEESatisfaction, “QueenS”. Inspired by Mickalene Thomas, of course. Cop the album here: www.subpop.com/artists/theesatisfaction
I’ll just be over here.
I’m listening to all 12 songs off of R. Kelly’s first album 12 Play for probably the first time since, idk, 1994?
Track 5: Freak Dat Body

Track 4: It Seems Like You’re Ready
How can someone who wrote something as goofy as “Trapped in the Closet” sound this sincere (and sincerely decadent) about sex? I believe the question might have my answer. This song is about… well there’s this girl right? And she’s, um, ready… for stuff.
But the beat is hypnotic. I feel like beats in R&B songs were still relatively new in 1993? Bridging that gap between Vandross R&B and everything exciting about black music at the time.
